NEWS AND NOTICES

Chemeca arrives in Sydney next week

Academia, research and industry from around the world will meet in Sydney next week at this year’s Chemeca Conference, held on 18-21 September (www.chemeca2011.com). Chemeca 2011 is the annual chemical engineering conference jointly organised by Engineers Australia's Chemical College, the IChemE in Australia and New Zealand, and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer Prof Mary O’Kane will open the conference on Monday, followed by Sir William Wakeham, international president of IChemE, and vice-president and honorary international secretary of the Royal Academy of Engineering in Britain. He will examine the ways in which the chemical engineering profession is addressing some of the key challenges facing humanity and argue that the profession must continually expand its boundaries.

Other distinguished speakers from academia include Martyn Poliakoff, acclaimed professor of chemistry at the University of Nottingham, UK, and Professor Maria Flytzani-Stephanopoulos from Tufts University in the US who will speak on “Nanocatalysis for sustainable energy”.

Industry representatives will include: Jim McIlvenny, group senior vice-president for mega projects at the Dow Chemical Company; Julian Segal, managing director and chief executive officer of Caltex Australia; and Ross McCann, executive chairman of Qenos.

They will speak at a special Industry Leaders Plenary Session, which will be opened by Prof Margaret Sheil, CEO of the Australian Research Council, on behalf of Kim Carr, federal minister for innovation, industry, science and research.

Excellence in chemical engineering will be celebrated during the conference dinner, when the prestigious Chemeca awards will be announced, with the top award being the Chemeca Medal.

Highlighting the Middle East interest group

In October 2009 Engineers Australia announced that it was setting up a Middle East Interest Group with joint sub-groups in Dubai and Doha. Since then the membership of the interest group has grown from strength to strength, delivering events (technical talks, site visits, etc) every two months.

The Middle East Group is now made up of 317 members from Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Yemen, and does not include members normally included in “Greater Middle East”.

The group’s convenor Len Johnstone extends a warm invitation to any members who travel to the Middle East on a short or long term basis, to join in their activities.  Johnstone can be contacted at lenj@loxinfo.co.th.

A helping hand from afar

by Cynthia Lee – Engineers Australia manager international relations

No sooner had the Year of the Humanitarian Engineering been launched early this year, than all of us were made aware of the devastation and loss of life and property that was unfolding across the eastern states of Australia, and in parts of Western Australia.

To underscore the powers of nature, Cyclone Yasi made landfall on the Queensland coast in early February and created havoc in the communities in its path.

Queensland premier Anna Bligh set up “The Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal” to appeal for cash donations for the people affected by the disaster.

In March 2011, Engineers Australia national president Merv Lindsay visited the Engineers Australia Hong Kong Chapter and spoke to our members in Hong Kong about the destruction in Queensland. His address prompted – although unknown to the national president at the time – a donation appeal for the disaster victims.

Recently, the Hong Kong Chapter forwarded a cheque for almost $2500 from the members in the Chapter towards the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal. This cheque was presented to Queensland Division president Dennis Wogan by Queensland director Ian McEwan.

This act of kindness is appreciated. A very big thank you to our members in the Hong Kong Chapter for your generosity.

Innovation discussion paper open for comment

Engineers Australia Innovation Taskforce is inviting member comments on its draft discussion paper on innovation in Australia.

The discussion paper is the first step towards developing an Engineers Australia report and policy statement on innovation. Feedback received from this initial consultation process will be incorporated into a report that will make recommendations to government about how innovation-related policies and programs can be improved. The report will then form the basis of a policy statement that will be submitted for approval by the Engineers Australia Council.

The innovation discussion paper asks a range of questions and seeks feedback from members about their experiences of the innovation system. The paper also provides opportunities for members to submit case studies to illustrate the problems/barriers faced by the engineering profession at various stages of the innovation process as well as to show the impact of successful engineering innovations.

To view the draft discussion paper and supplementary information click here. Closing date for submissions is 30 September.

Medical technology discussion paper open for comment

Engineers Australia's College of Biomedical Engineering has released Crossroads – A discussion paper on managing medical technology for an assured future. The paper looks at issues relating to the implications for Australia's health system of current medical technology management practices. The benefits to be derived from contemporary medical technology are well recognised. Patient safety and the need for diagnostic accuracy and treatment effectiveness are critical. The Australian community expects that the medical equipment used in our system will be state of the art, safe, effective and reliable. Comments are being sought until 30 September. The Transfer Chute Design Manual for Conveyor Belt Systems
$318.18 + GST = $350.00
2011 9780646529356 272pp Hardcover

In today’s conveyor systems the major source of maintenance and maintenance related delays to production usually have a common root cause; the design and functionality of the transfer chute feeding the conveyors. The Transfer Chute Design Manual brings together the way transfer chute design has evolved, relating this evolution to the underlying design principles that must be applied if the transfer is to operate with the minimum of maintenance consequences.
