NEWS AND NOTICES Innovation and medical technology discussion papers open for comment Engineers Australia Innovation Taskforce is inviting member comments on its draft discussion paper on innovation in Australia. The discussion paper is the first step towards developing an Engineers Australia report and policy statement on innovation. Feedback received from this initial consultation process will be incorporated into a report that will make recommendations to government about how innovation-related policies and programs can be improved. The report will then form the basis of a policy statement that will be submitted for approval by the Engineers Australia Council. The innovation discussion paper asks a range of questions and seeks feedback from members about their experiences of the innovation system. The paper also provides opportunities for members to submit case studies to illustrate the problems/barriers faced by the engineering profession at various stages of the innovation process as well as to show the impact of successful engineering innovations. The draft discussion paper and supplementary information is available here. Closing date for submissions is 30 September. Also, Engineers Australia's College of Biomedical Engineering has released Crossroads – A discussion paper on managing medical technology for an assured future. The paper looks at issues relating to the implications for Australia's health system of current medical technology management practices. The benefits to be derived from contemporary medical technology are well recognised. Patient safety and the need for diagnostic accuracy and treatment effectiveness are critical. The Australian community expects that the medical equipment used in our system will be state of the art, safe, effective and reliable. Comments are being sought until 30 September. Have you read the Reconciliation Action Plan yet? This is just a reminder to read Engineers Australia's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) for the period 2011 to 2015 – a commitment and response by the organisation to “closing the gap”, which was launched last month. In this, the Year of Humanitarian Engineering, Engineers Australia's RAP details steps and priorities that the organisation will undertake to assist in helping to achieve indigenous equality and to help build positive relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous people. To read the RAP go to: http://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/rap/. Call for young engineers to join the discussion Young Engineers Australia national chair Dr Jessica Andrewartha has called on young engineers to join the current discussion on humanitarian engineering. In her latest blog, Andrewartha discusses corporate social responsibility, reconciliation action plans and the recently attended humanitarian engineering summit. Andrewartha said the Australian Humanitarian Engineering Summit in Brisbane identified six focus areas in need of attention: education, capacity building, appropriate technology, reconciliation, partnerships, and commitment and leadership. She said it was now time to join the conversation to flesh out these response areas and the online forum was open at http://yohe.uservoice.com/. Click here to read the blog.
