NEWS AND NOTICES

Transport museum recognised

On 15 November, the Tasmanian Transport Museum in Glenorchy was recognised by Engineers Australia for its collection of transport items that have engineering heritage significance.

The formal ceremony, which was attended by 160 guests, included an address from governor of Tasmania Peter Underwood.

The transport collection began in 1962 with the donation of tram no 141 when Hobart’s electric tram system was closed and the formation of the Tasmanian Transport Museum Society. In 1972 the Glenorchy City Council leased the site to the society, conveniently beside the main north-south railway, and the museum officially opened in 1983.

High performance sportsground for Dubbo

Dubbo Group of Engineers Australia held its final event for 2011 with 45 engineers embarking on a site visit to the Apex Oval stormwater harvesting and high performance playing field reconstruction.

A technical presentation by Dubbo City Council’s works manager Ian Bailey was followed by a guided tour with director of technical services Stewart Mcleod to the heights of the grandstand for a birds eye view of the detention tank.

Dubbo City Council is engaged in an $11.5 million upgrade of Apex Oval, for which a federal grant of $4.5 million has been obtained under the Water for the Future Program. One of the major components of the project is the construction of a 10ML underground storage tank which will harvest stormwater for playing field irrigation from the Council’s East Dubbo Drainage Scheme.

Storage tank construction has commenced following completion of the bulk earthworks, which were complicated by the fact that Apex Oval had been a municipal landfill prior to its conversion to a premium football field.

The tank will be composed of thousands of plastic Rain Smart Ellipse modules stacked together like Lego. These modules will be wrapped as a 10ML unit, in a watertight HDPE/geofabric skin welded at the seams. Once the tank has been completed, a high performance playing field will be reinstated as a premium sand-based turf surface of national playing standard.

Engineers interested in the activities of the Dubbo Group can contact stewart.mcleod@dubbo.nsw.gov.au.

The Apex Oval in Dubbo is being revamped with a large water storage tank and a new turf surface of national playing standard.

Australian Coastal and Marine Law
Rachel Baird, Donald R. Rothwell
$122.73 + GST = $135.00
2011 9781862878440 416pp Paperback

Australia is heavily dependent upon sea-borne trade. Our economy, shipping industry, ports and harbours all benefit from the maritime activity. High volumes of shipping also bring the risk of pollution and maritime incidents. In addition to the economic importance of the maritime domain, it has a significant place in the national psyche. The Australian legal framework depends upon two regimes – the international legal regime founded principally upon the law of the sea and a complex national regime in which the Commonwealth, states and territories and local authorities share responsibility for governance.

Belt Conveyors: Principles for Calculations
Kazimierz Golka, George Bolliger, Costa Vasili

$120.00 + GST = $132.00
2007 9780975181928 288pp Paperback

The process and issues associated with design of a belt conveyor or belt conveyor system can be a daunting one for both the novice and experienced engineer. Many standards covering this subject matter are convoluted, making it difficult for entrants to this area of engineering to identify and design the correct type of conveyor for the job. Written by three Australian engineers with broad experience in the field, this text takes a logical, step approach to the design process, building up from bulk material parameters, through the initial selection of components to refinement of conveyor designs.
