NEWS AND NOTICES

National infrastructure “barely adequate”

The federal government’s advisory body Infrastructure Australia has deemed the nation’s infrastructure “barely adequate”, echoing the results of Engineers Australia’s 2010 Australian Infrastructure Report Card.
Sir Rod Eddington, the chairman of Infrastructure Australia, said Australia’s productivity rate has slowed over the past decade to a point below the average of OECD nations because of poor infrastructure.
“Productivity has slowed as a direct result of infrastructure shortfalls – time lost in travel, delays at ports, lost production due to water restrictions,” he said.
In welcoming the report, Engineers Australia’s infrastructure report card committee spokesman Rolfe Hartley said: “As a large proportion of Australia’s infrastructure slides towards the end of its useful life, the report is another wake-up call to all Australian governments about the perils of the prevailing inertia.
“For over a decade our own Engineers Australia infrastructure report cards have delivered the evidence and spelt out recommendations about the clearly looming infrastructure crisis across Australia. Infrastructure Australia has now amplified this and highlighted infrastructure as a significant contributor to Australia’s falling ranking among OECD nations.
“The fact that the federal government took on board Engineers Australia’s key recommendation to establish Infrastructure Australia was a major leadership breakthrough, and now we have that organisation giving independent, rigorous and comprehensive advice that is not tainted by the timeline to the next election date."
A more detailed article on the report appears in the July issue of Engineers Australia magazine.
