NEWS AND NOTICES International award for Make It So campaign Engineers Australia’s Make It So campaign has won a major international award. Last week it was announced the winner of the Associations category at the Asia Pacific Sabre Awards, which is the world's largest competition for the public relations industry. Held in three separate regions – North America; Europe, Middle East and Africa; and Asia Pacific – the competition celebrates PR campaigns that demonstrate the highest levels of creativity, integrity and effectiveness. Make It So was described by former CEO of Engineers Australia Peter Taylor as “the most significant public awareness campaign ever conducted by Engineers Australia”. Make It So began as a public awareness campaign in 2008, and has since become a major platform for Engineers Australia to continue to promote and celebrate engineering globally. Focus on skills and infrastructure welcomed Engineers Australia has welcomed the federal Senate Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Committee’s terms of reference for addressing issues around the shortage of engineering and related employment skills for Australia’s infrastructure development. Acting chief executive Rupert Grayston said the committee’s focus is highly encouraging at a time when there is no real end in sight to delivering an adequate engineering skills base, across Australia, to match demands for upgrading existing infrastructure to support increasing population and economic expansion. “For over two decades, Engineers Australia has been at the forefront alerting governments, the private sector and the wider community about the facts and strategies to ensure economic growth is not stymied by Australia’s capacity to develop and deliver the right infrastructure,” he said. Grants for project management training Engineering Education Australia, Engineers Australia’s subsidiary company for continuing professional development, is acting as a lead organisation to apply to the National Workforce Development Fund for training in project management. If funding applications are successful, businesses can receive grants of up to 67% of the full cost of the program. EEA will undertake the application process, organise the training and assessment, and ensure compliance with federal government requirements for the program. To participate in the next funding round, contact Angela Rhodes-Fiume on (03) 9274 9603 (direct) or at angela@eeaust.com.au Salary survey now open – managers invited The 2011 Engineers Australia Salary and Benefits Survey, conducted online, is now open. It is directed at employers, rather than employees. Managers and HR officers are invited to participate. The annual survey collects detailed information across all disciplines and grades of engineering. The results will be published early next year. The 2010 edition was the largest in the survey’s history with almost 450 companies participating, representing more than 150,000 professional engineers. The nominated person who completes the survey will go in the draw to win a choice of the following:
