Baillie, JohnJohn Baillie, 63
Principal civil engineer, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Adelaide

John Baillie, a graduate of the University of Adelaide, is at the forefront of providing infrastructure in cross-cultural situations to remote indigenous communities in Australia and the Pacific.
He is currently Parsons Brinckerhoff's project manager and team leader on a major infrastructure program in Vanuatu for Millenium Challenge Corporation, a new US government agency with a focus on alleviating poverty through economic growth.
Over a 34-year career he has worked with communities to identify projects and technical solutions that best fit community aspirations. He has backed this up with a wealth of experience and expertise in program and project management, in engineering design of civil infrastructure for commercial, industrial and institutional development and in contract administration.
From early in his career, he has believed that remote communities have a right to have their needs understood, but that this right has to be balanced against professional judgement on the optimum solution. Getting this balance right can be the key to a successful project, he believes.

Davids, AndyAndy Davids, 49
Director, Senior Management Group, Hyder Consulting, Sydney

Dr Andy Davids is an internationally rec-ognised expert in the design of tall buildings in both steel and concrete.
He is currently working with Hyder to provide independent peer review, design certification and construction supervision in-chief services for the 160-storey Burj Dubai tower in Dubai, which will be the world's tallest building.
In the past three years his design team has completed four projects more than 250m tall, including the 350m-tall Emirates Towers in Dubai.
Davids' design group also has five towers from 70 to 90 levels under various stages of design or construction in three other
countries.
Some of the Australian tall buildings he has worked on include the 70-level Sunland Tower One and the 50-level Sunland Tower Two on the Gold Coast, and the 60-level Latitude Tower and the 40-level Berry Street Residential projects in Sydney.
Davids holds both PhD and Masters degrees in structural engineering from Sydney University and a bachelors degree from the University of Western Australia.

Carfrae, TristramTristram Carfrae, 47
Principal and senior structural engineer, Arup, Sydney

An MA in mechanical sciences from Cambridge University, Tristram Carfrae has a reputation among his peers for his passion regarding the integration of architecture and engineering with-in a sustainability framework.
He has been based in Sydney since the early 1990s where he took part in the structural engineering of some of the highly acclaimed Sydney Olympics facilities.
Recently Carfrae and his team worked with architect the Cox Group on the design of an innovative double-helix shaped rigid tubular steel pedestrian bridge for Singapore's Marina Bay.
And true to form for Carfrae, this is a most economical design, using a fifth of the steel that would be required for a conventional box girder bridge.
Carfrae also played a leading role in the design of the Olympic Swimming Centre in Beijing.
He was made an Arup Fellow in 2002, the highest award within the firm for design and technical achievement.
In 2001 Engineers Australia named him Professional Engineer of the Year.

Pinzone, TomTom Pinzone, 59
Director of Marketing and Business Development, GHD, Sydney

Tom Pinzone has more than 30 years experience in managing, planning, investigating and impleme-nting infrastructure projects and is GHD's Transportation and Logistics Business Stream leader.
His most significant contribution to the profession is his leadership of the teams which prepared Engineers Australia's two national and eight state and territory Infrastructure Report Cards over the past five years.
The report cards identified significant issues and opportunities regarding the planning and management of infrastructure in Australia and led to increased knowledge and public debate about the improvements required.
The report cards were among Engineers Australia's most successful awareness campaigns.
The launch events for the report cards attracted widespread media coverage from radio, TV and newspapers, and attracted government attention at both the federal and state levels.
Pinzone holds a degree in civil engineering from the University of NSW.

Mal Dunning, 61
Chief Technical Principal (Highways and Transportation) SMEC, Canberra

Mal Dunning is recognised as one of Australia's top highway engineers and has been called upon on many recent landmark road projects, incl-uding Westlink M7 and M2 motorways in Sydney. On Westlink M7 he was responsible for providing the design of the Lighthorse Interchange, the most complex motorway-to-motorway intersection in Australia. Dunning has also provided expert input into the Pacific Motorway (Brisbane to Gold Coast), several projects on the Pacific Highway in NSW and the Gateway Bridge duplication in Brisbane, to name just a few. Outside of Australia he has been involved in a number of major road projects in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and helped draft new expressway design standards for the Malaysian Highway Authority. A graduate of the University of Queensland, Dunning also has a masters degree in highway engineering from the University of NSW.

McDonald, LenLen McDonald, 68
Chairman of the NSW Dams Safety Committee, Sydney

Len McDonald has more than 30 years experience in the water industry and has developed a wide expertise in all aspects of dam engineering.
He has been the lead author of a number of publications providing guidance on dam risk analysis and safety evaluation of dams.
His work has gained international recognition and he is regularly consulted by major dams agencies in North America and Europe.
Initially appointed to the NSW Dams Safety Committee in 1987, McDonald has practised as a private dams consultant since his retirement some years ago from the position of assistant principal engineer in the Dams & Civil section of the then NSW Department of Public Works and Services.
He took over the chairmanship of the DSC in mid 1997.
Until late 2003, he was the assistant secretary to the Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD) and is a member of the International Committee on Large Dams (ICOLD) Committee on Dam Safety.

The fellowships have been designed to give a number of the country's top scientists and engineers in natural resource management the time to find answers to major environmental and landscape management challenges.
Evans has used the fellowship to study surface water and groundwater interaction issues across Australia, with the aim of identifying practical management options and solutions.
He has influenced others through workshops for water resource managers and through a comprehensive discussion paper identifying a range of tools and options for addressing these environmental challenges.
Evans has a PhD in finite element analysis (civil engineering) from the University of NSW and a science degree from the University of Melbourne.
