Railway Safety – Interlocking and Train Protection
Ian Macfarlane $100.00 + GST = $110.00

Interlocking and Train Protection is the third Part of Macfarlane's series on Railway Safety. It addresses traditional mechanical and Double Wire interlocking of points and signals, electrical interlocking, and techniques with no interlocking at all. There's a special focus on crossing loops, and some landmark accidents both overseas and here in Australia are described to bring out the key points.

The book discusses the principles of simple in-cab train protection systems like Driver Reminder, Deadman, and Vigilance, including an exciting new vigilance system, then addresses Automatic Warning and full Automatic Train Protection, from 1851 to 2004 with the key features of commonly used. The final chapters address the last three major electric train accidents in Melbourne and Sydney in the traditional hard-hitting manner for which Macfarlane is known.

CONTENTS: Head-on at Harvey – Mechanical Interlocking of Points and Signals – Electric Interlocking of Points and Signals – Accidents at Crossing Loops – Open-Switch Accidents in Privatised Australia – Electric Signal System Failures and Accidents – Drivers and Signals Passed at Danger – Invigilance Accidents and their Prevention – Train Protection Systems & Principles – Traditional Train Protection Systems – Modern Automatic Train Protection Systems – A Tale of Two Cities – Up There with the Best?

Risk Management Strategies Guide
Engineering Science and Technology Professional Standards Society,
Engineers Australia

The Guide deals with what Engineers Australia considers to be two key areas of risk exposure, namely an Organisation’s Risks and specific Project Risks for each project undertaken. When preparing a Risk Management Policy Statement/Manual, strategies need to be developed to cater for both areas of risk. Some strategies members might consider for controlling risk exposure in each of these areas are provided.
